When the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law took effect nearly a decade ago, few people could have predicted that the nation’s well-founded desire to beef up students’ reading and math performance could elbow subjects like science and social studies to the margins of the traditional core curriculum and give others like art, music, and physical education the status of “frills.”
